How to Redesign a Classroom to Optimize Learning Experience Essay Example for Free

How to Redesign a Classroom to Optimize Learning Experience Essay The overall learning goal for us students is to grasp what the instructor teaches in class and gain extra knowledge and abilities through class discussion and interaction. To that end, it’s best to study in an optimal learning environment, so as to keep focused in class and avoid distraction from externals. We pay for the service – our learning experience, hoping to maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of this kind of service. An optimal learning environment is beneficial to building a cohesive team in which members could communicate with each other, and to encouraging interactions among all the students and the professor. Through observation of major students behaviors, I find that the current physical environment in our classroom was somewhat defective. The following key points are summarized as major gaps or pitfalls in the current environment. Late Arrivals: I find that most of the students arrive in the classroom ahead of or on time. However, some may be late and walk in across the stage, thus distracting other’s attention in class. Uncomfortable Chairs: The pad on each seat can make annoying noise when we unfold it. This will distract other students’ attention, especially those who sit near the moving pads. Various Seating Preferences: students are seated randomly, most of students like to seat in the front row, and the outer of rows, leaving some seats in the middle empty, so the best capacity in the room isn’t fully utilized. Randomly seating also results in inconvenience for some group members to sit together. Inconvenient Seating Arrangement: the space between rows is narrow, so it’s not convenient for students to walk through and it’s always noisy to move the small pads connected to the seats. Moreover, it’s such a long row that it would be inconvenient and a waste of time to walk through one side to the middle or the other end. Less Efficient Equipment Blackboard and Projector: For those seating in the side areas and in the rear, the visibility of the projector isn’t so good. Similarly, when the professor writes on one side of the blackboard, those who seat in the other side have difficulty in reading the handwriting. Dim Lighting: the lighting in the classroom is a little dark that it’s easy for us to fall asleep. The arrangement of lights in the roof isn’t so rational that sometimes we can’t see the blackboards because of light reflecting. Insufficient Ventilation: The windows in the back are closed all the time and the air conditioning always creates an environment that is too cold or hot and dry. Students usually don’t feel very comfortable when there’re too many students in the classroom. Difficult Access to the Classroom: More often, only one door is open to the classroom, thus restricting students’ access to the classroom to only one way. Those who can’t find a seat near the door can only go the other side, and this would distract other’s attention. Besides, once the door is locked, the students can’t open it from outside, requiring help from those in the classroom. The above-mentioned points about the seating and facilities in the classroom would present unfavorable impacts on our learning experience. So a new layout of the classroom is required to help enhance our learning environment. Here I categorize the objectives into four points as the conceptual design principles. * To make full use of the 75 minutes in class, which means there’s no or little disruption during class. * Perfect seating arrangement to facilitate easy access and smooth movement. * Minimum discipline required relating to seating arrangement so that everyone will feel comfortable when in class. * Make facilities, such as blackboard and projector, lighting, acoustics, and walls, conducive to learning experience. (b) What specific improvement would your proposed redesign help accomplish? Generally speaking, students will learn best in a clean, comfortable, and quiet environment where there are no external disruptions and noises. So we need a positive classroom climate to allow us to meet the basic needs of physical and mental health. The following session is about the recommendations I make to help alleviate the gaps and thus enhance the learning experience. Physically Comfortable Chairs: We could improve the quality of the chairs by signing contracts with those chair-makers who could provide user-friendly chairs. That is to say, the activity space for writing and putting stuffs would be larger, and it’s best for the chairs to be soundless when we unfold the pads with them. Easy Access Seating Arrangements: I will redesign the current layout of the seats by dividing all these seats into four columns and four rows. There could be four seats per column for the middle two columns, and the other two sides columns could have five or six seats each. The distance between each row could be larger so as to allow sufficient space for individuals to learn. This kind of design could enable students to access to the seats easily without disturbing others much. The professor could also make minimum requirements that those who come early seat in the middle, thus those who are late for class could seat in the sided columns without distracting others. More importantly, since a team is usually composed of four persons, it’s also convenient for groups to sit together. Additionally, in this way, students will seat together more compactly, facilitating discussion among teachers and students. Larger Projector Screen and High-tech Handwriting: It would be best to widen the projector screen in this rectangular room. As I mentioned above, for those seat in the sides and rear, it’s hard to recognize some important contents in the slides projected on the screen (e. g. numbers, charts). Enlarging the projector screen would surely enhance the visibility of projector and hence improve our learning experience. Meanwhile, I noticed that sometimes the handwriting of the professor is hard to read. And those sitting aside couldn’t see the notes in the blackboard clearly. So I recommend that the professor use high-tech product such as the pad or IBM’s tablet-based pen, by which the professor could write on the screen of the laptop and it could then be projected in the blackboard screen. With enlarged screen, the visibility of handwriting could also be enhanced. Bright Lighting and â€Å"Audiovisual Scenario†: We need to add more electrical lights in our classroom and rearrange the light distribution. However, the lights couldn’t be too bright to harm the eyes and result in reflecting. More importantly, we need to consider the illuminance levels according to daylight, glaring and uniformity. Another thing we need to take into account is the lighting requirements for video images. So it’s best for us to have two distinctly lighting setups: a â€Å"bright† classroom with appropriate illuminance throughout the classroom, and an †audiovisual† scenario that limits light on the screen to a suitable level when we see vedios in class. Warm Color of walls: Choosing the right color for classroom walls is conducive to learning experience. The right pain color of the wall can transform a distracted environment into a focused space. White is a traditional color, but it could undermine the learning environment of the classroom. It reflects most of the lights that hits it, and could be harsh and exhaust our eyes. While taupe and cream colors of wall would be warmer, and could help students more focused. Evidence also shows that warm colors such as taupe and cream can stimulate creativity. Using different colors on the wall where there’re some facilities so as to remind the professor and students of the purpose of them. For example, the background color of the walls on which there are hangers could be light blue or purple, colors which can also help you relaxed and calmed. Optimized Ventilation: The method of distributing outdoor air in classroom has a positive impact on indoor air quality and thermal comfort of students. So it would be better if students could open the windows in the back wall when the class is finished. And students who come for the next class could close the windows before class, letting fresh air come in for 15-20 minutes. Moreover, It’s best to leave the two doors to the classroom open. On the one hand, it could expedite the flow rate of air and enhance the ventilation and exchange effectiveness. On the other hand, leaving two doors open would facilitate those late arrivals to find seats in the sides, so that they don’t need to go straightly in front of the teacher, thus diminishing distraction. External Diminished Noise and Distraction: Since the walls in the classroom are already sound proof, we don’t need to worry about the noise from outside. The major noise created by late arrivals to move through seats could be addressed through the new layout of seats and improved seat quality. Hence, students would be more focused in class. Clean Environment and Safety Facilities: Basically, a clean environment in the classroom is a must for students to gain the best learning experience. Students should be required to take with them the trashes after class, and the cleaners also need to tide the classrooms more frequently. Furthermore, It’s best to check the safety facilities in the classroom such as the fire alarm on a regular basis, say, twice a month. Because students will be relieved when they know they are learning in a safe place. In sum, the above-mentioned rearrangements are all considered to be physically, emotionally and academically favorable to the learning experience in this classroom. Once students are physically comfortable with the environment they are in, they will be emotionally focused on what they are learning and talking. Moreover, the academically improved learning equipment could maximize the learning experience the students would go through.

Nestle is serving worldwide with its more than 500 factories in 86 countries comprising almost all continents. Nestlà ©s product portfolio is more than 500 products all over the world serving best to their customers. Henri Nestlà © endowed his company with the symbol derived from his name. His family coat of arms, the nest with a mother bird protecting her young, became the Companys logo and a symbol of the Companys care and attitude to life-long nutrition. The Nestlà © nest represents the nourishment, security and sense of family that are so essential to life Launched on the North American market in 2003, Nestlà © PURE LIFE is destined to become the worlds top and most widely distributed brand by 2010. The company is seeking to provide customer with pure drinking water on suitable prices make the product as convenient as possible. According to their claim that they provide the best food throughout the world Nestle is leading brand in water market and has left behind many local brands which were working before the launching of Nestle Pure Life. Now it has maximum market share in developed and major cities of Pakistan like Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad, Multan, Hyderabad and many others. As we have discussed earlier that Nestle is going to become the fully market leader of water market in Pakistan, signs are clearly visible to achieve the set point of Nestle. Nestle Pure Life is also the star product of Nestle Pakistan and most probably all over the world where Nestle Pure Life exist. Here you can see the market share chart for the product and after that there is a Boston Consultancy Group Matrix is shown which would describe the ranking of Nestle Pure Life in product portfolio of Nestle Pakistan. Nestlà ©s business objective is to manufacture and market the Companys products in such a way as to create value that can be sustained over the long term for shareholders, employees, consumers, and business partners. Nestlà © recognizes that its consumers have a sincere and legitimate interest in the behavior, beliefs, and actions of the Company behind brands in which they place their trust and that without its consumers the Company would not exist. Nestlà © continues to maintain its commitment to follow and respect all applicable local laws in each of its markets. According to our observation and market survey, we have concluded that as such there is not set demographic techniques to set the specific target market. Because, water is something that everyone uses. Everyone can use any size of bottle that Nestle is offering. There are some variations that can be made throw OUR OBSERVATION but not from the company Nestle Pure Life comes in four different sizes. These four are targeting different types of people and lifestyles. The smallest size of Nestle Pure Life Water of 0.5L. This size is being heavily used by the consumers in place of soft drink. University and Colleges are also included in its target market of this size. But the product is used by everyone in the society also. It is not only specified people that have been discussed above. The second size of the Nestle Pure Life Water which is about 1.5L. This size is being used in mostly meetings. You can say that any kind of organizational meeting or any other social meeting, this product i s being used. The third size of the Nestle Pure Life which is used in mostly houses and offices in the waiting area. The fully household product and also using in executive rooms in offices with the dispensers. This Nestle Pure Life Water Bottle is also very helpful in many dispensers available in the market with good options We can easily observe that Nestle itself is not taking active part in social welfare. And on the other hand, we see the lower prices of the product as compared to the other FMCGs Companys products like Unilever, Colgate. Palmolive and Procter and Gamble. If we look at the prices, we can observe that Nestle is also using its name for the promotional activities and pricing strategies also. They have to maintain their level of efficiency and always provide the best at best price. Nestle cares about the customers. As the time is of inflation, nestle is trying to overcome the pricing problems to the extent they can do. Nestlà ©s point of view is Only by understanding their needs can we serve our consumers to the fullest Profit earning is the core aim of every company but in case of nestle their profit margin is small just for the sake of customers trust and happiness. Only a few amount of profit is collected from pure life water. Nestle always strive to give superior product at low rates . Nestle is also one of the leader of retaining their customers. This is one reason of their success. They use the simple formula for the price that is Cost + Profit. The main reason is Pure Water which is the name of this product. Rests of the water products are using chemicals which can be harmful for the human body but Nestle Pure Life is the only water product which is pure in nature. That is also the unique selling point of Nestle Pure Life. This is the most powerful point that is in the mind of the customers while purchasing any water bottle in their routine life. The brand name is also very important for the consumers. The slogan of Nestle is Good Food Good Life. That is very attractive slogan people can attract from. It puts the perception in the minds of people that theyre being offered good products for their healthy lifestyle. If you look at the logo of Nestle, youll get to know that a bird is feeding the children. Obviously a mother cant deceive the children. Nestle pure life is a brand of nestle which explains a big symbol of quality to customers. Nestle Pure Life shows in their ads about the purity of water and the water need for you r body. In its launching advertisement, the company advertises Nestle Pure Life very successfully. In that advertisement, a lady is drinking Nestle Pure Life Water and then it goes towards inside the body to show the functions of pure water. That was the awesome commercial that boosted the sale of Nestle Pure Life. Nestle is also advertising on famous websites like you can observe that whenever you will login to your face book account, the ads of Nestle will be there. There are number of sign boards and banners you will see in the cities to aware people about the products of Nestle. Thus, Nestle is using all types of media to advertise their products in anyway. When Nestle Pure Life was launched, they distributed the free samples of 0.5L bottles for market testing and for their advertising purpose. Then a short walk was also arranged for the sake of good health and seminars was also conducted to make sure about the pure water needed your body. To understand the depth of Positioning, we will divide into three steps The final aspect of the micro environment is publics, which is any group that has an interest in or impact on the organizations ability to meet its goals. For example, financial publics can hinder a companys ability to obtain funds affecting the level of credit a company has. Media publics include newspapers and magazines that can publish articles of interest regarding the company and editorials that may influence customers opinions and our mostly products are selling on the public advertisement because the people are the too much concision about their health. Government publics can affect the company by passing legislation and laws that put restrictions on the companys actions. Citizen-action publics include environmental groups and minority group and can question the actions of a company and put them in the public spotlight. Local publics are neighborhood and community of the organizations and will also question a companys impact on the local area and the level of responsibility of their actions. The general public can greatly affect the company as any change in their attitude, whether positive or negative, can cause sales to go up or down because the general public is often the companys customer base. And finally, the internal publics impacts include all those who are employed within the company and deal with the organization and construction of the companys product. Each market impact has different characteristics and causes they find important. This can be beneficial to a marketer as they can decide who their product would benefit most and tailor their marketing plan to attract that segment. Demography covers many aspects that are important to marketers including family dynamics, geographic shifts, work force changes, and levels of diversity in any given area. Another aspect of the macro environment is the economic environment. This refers to the purchasing power of potential customers and the ways in which people spend their money. Within this area are two different economies, subsistence and industrialized. Subsistence economies are based more in agriculture and consume their own industrial output. Industrial economies have markets that are diverse and carry many different types of goods. Each is important to the marketer because each has a highly different spending pattern as well as different distribution of wealth. The natural impacts: The natural environment is another important impact of the macro environment for the organization. This includes the natural resources that a company uses as inputs and affects their marketing activities. The concern in this area is the increased pollution, shortages of raw materials and increased governmental intervention. As raw materials become increasingly scarcer, the ability to create a companys product gets much harder. Also, pollution can go as far as negatively affecting a companys reputation if they are known for damaging the environment. The last concern, government intervention can make it increasingly harder for a company to fulfill their goals as requirements get more stringent. The technical impacts: The technological environment is perhaps one of the fastest changing factors in the macro environment. This includes all developments from antibiotics and surgery to nuclear missiles and chemical weapons to automobiles and credit cards. As these markets develop it can create new markets and new uses for products. It also requires a company to stay ahead of others and update their own technology as it becomes outdated. They must stay informed of trends so they can be part of the next big thing, rather than becoming outdated and suffering the consequences financially. The political impacts: The political environment includes all laws, government agencies, and groups that influence or limit other organizations and individuals within a society. It is important for marketers to be aware of these restrictions as they can be complex. Some products are regulated by both state and federal laws. There are even restrictions for some products as to who the target market may be, for example, cigarettes should not be marketed to younger children. There are also many restrictions on subliminal messages and monopolies. As laws and regulations change often, this is a very important aspect for a marketer to monitor. The final aspect of the macro environment is the cultural environment, which consists of institutions and basic values and beliefs of a group of people. The values can also be further categorized into core beliefs, which passed on from generation to generation and very difficult to change, and secondary beliefs, which tend to be easier to influence. As a marketer, it is important to know the difference between the two and to focus your marketing campaign to reflect the values of a target audience. Nestle is the world leader in FMCG industry. People trust on the products launched by the company even the product is facing some problems. Nestle was doing its good job in past but now it is facing some problems of low quality of their products. Nestle is sued by someone they claim that they are doing unethical business. They are mixing unhygienic things which can cause damage to customers health. Its example is that their water is not pure and good for health. You can see dust partials in Nestle mineral water when you keep it in sunlight that shows its product quality is down. Now they have to do more making their strong position in market because when you lose your image in customers eye then it is difficult to renew their image. Marketing plan of Nestle Marketing plan of Nestle MARKETING PLAN OF NESTLE NESTLE Nestle had setup its first plant in 1961 in Moga (Punjab). BUSINESS STATEMENT Nescafe business objective , and that of management and employees at all levels , is to manufacture and market the Companys products in such a way as to create value that can be sustained over the long term for shareholders , employees , consumers , business partners and the large national economies in which Nescafe operates. Nescafe is conscious of the fact that the success of a corporation is a reflection of the professionalism, conduct and the responsible attitude of its management and employees. It continues to maintain its commitment to follow and respect all applicable local laws in each of its markets. It s conscious of the fact that the success of a corporation is a reflection of the professionalism, conduct and the responsible attitude of its management and the employees. Therefore recruitment of the right people and ongoing training and development are crucial. MARKETING OBJECTIVES We are going to use the method SMART: Specific: The objectives have to be clear. For example, in each shop, the company of â€Å"NESCAFE† must achieve the selling objectives. The turnover to reach will not be the same in the different shop because we make the selling objectives according to size of the shop, the frequentation, the type of the clients. Measurable: The company has to follow the different targets in the sales outlets and if each Shop allowed reaching the objectives. To measure the sales we can calculate the sales by day In order to understand how the client bought the product. With these data we can improve The strategy and the sales. The commercials can ask to the supermarket to put the product in A different way or to make more promotion. Achievable: The targets have to be realist. At the beginning the turnover would grow slowly and after the promotion, it would have a faster expansion. If we reach to win clients from Our main competitor (in a first time) and from the others tea brand (in a second time), the Sales would grow increasingly. The firm should have a long terms vision and should bereactive in front of decisions or problems which can occur. Relevant: the objectives have to be founded on fact and not on suppositions. The firm has to Respect its general strategy and its image. The firm should take into consideration the sales Of its competitors in order to be based on relevant objectives. Timed target: each objective should have a deadline. It can allow measuring the different Sales of the day, of the week, of the month, according to these data, the firm can change the Objectives or makes promotion to reach these objectives. INDUSTRY ANALYSIS TRENDS: In 2005, the tea industry reached the $1.7 billion category and it is expected to continue growing indefinitely (Mintel 2005). Market analyst believe the tea industry will continue to boom and is not expected to reach saturation level in the near future. The favourable movement in the tea industry can be attributed to two major factors: (a) Consumers need for convenience and time-saving services; and (b) the positive press given to tea. For the last decade, the health benefits of tea have gained wide coverage in the media. Studies continue to show the beneficial properties of tea, with health benefits ranging from lower cholesterol levels to improve arterial health and decreasing chance of cancer. This positive press has definitely catapulted the demand for tea. Consumers believe that tea is very good for the body, thus, it is more logical to drink more tea and less soda pop and other drinks. Consumer considers Nestea as a healthy habit. COMPETITOR: One of the major competitor for Nescafe tea in the world tea markets Lipton tea. Moreover the alliance between Unilever and PepsiCo is expected to enable Lipton to strengthen its global position. Lipton tea is going above and above these days, so the competition would be strong. There are other tea also, like Tetley who s gaining good market. CUSTOMER PROFILE: There are two major target markets for ready-to-drink tea. One group s the consumers on the go. These are the employees, students, and other consumers who lead a busy lifestyle. Thus, there is a need for products that are accessible and readily available. Convenience has dominated the market, particularly the food and beverage industry. The other group is made up of health conscious consumers, specifically the baby boomers who patronize anything healthy. SWOT ANALYSIS Strengths Great leap forward in media. Sustained improvement in customer service levels. Global leader in instant coffee the company has a clear global lead in the important coffee sector, which is growing significantly in emerging markets, accounting for 21% of global value in 2007. It has solid financial base. Nestle has a number of cost-saving programmes in place and as a result ,has been able to place itself in a position where it is able to afford sizeable investment in brand development. Weaknesses Agencies spent all their time fighting each other. Adopted a pricing strategy higher than competitors. The mass-market positioning of Nescafe, presents significant difficulties in terms of tapping into the growing demand for premium coffee products. Nescafe has developed only minimal presence in tea, a sector which is benefiting notably from the rise in consumer health-consciousness. Opportunities Shortage of tea supply unlikely. Consumers are living a healthier lifestyle. Growth in tea market due to promotional efforts of healthy attributes of tea. Euro monitor International forecasts that Asia-Pacific will be the fastest growing market for hot drinks over the 2007-2012 periods. As Nescafes largest regional market, Asia-Pacific therefore presents significant opportunities for the company n spite of poor conditions in major Western European markets. It could further develop its confectionary brands n other hot drinks along the lines of existing products. Threats High quality tea prices will increase moderately. Tea market is very competitive and relative elastic. Sluggish prospects in developed markets market maturity and aggressive competition amongst retailers are set to constrain hot drinks growth severely in major developed markets during the forecast period. Increasing transport and raw material costs, mainly relating to rising bean, oil and packaging prices, are placing significant pressure on margins in the companys beverage operations. MARKETING STRATEGIES Nescafe FMCG giants wants to be a â€Å"preferred client†. Strike balance between tapping into local knowledge of markets and disseminating global practice. Communication efforts are directed effectively and with maximum return on investment. To work with the limited number of agencies so that they really know the business. Encourage its agencies and employees by making changes in remuneration. Nescafe has even in the past resorted to low-key market penetration strategies. Nescafe can take advantage of the positive press on the health benefits of tea to boost the sales of its tea product line. The company can use recent studies on the health benefits of tea as the basis of its press releases and advertising campaigns. TARGET MARKET We want to touch the target group n a progressive way. At the beginning, it is important to touch the consumers of black tea, fruit tea and health tea. In second time, we should attract consumers of the main competitor â€Å"LIPTON TEA†. The next step will be to touch the tea drinkers in general and at the end, the consumers of coffee. We can argue for the coffee drinkers that the black tea is as strong as the coffee and good for the health. DISTRIBUTION CHANNEL Mc cann and publicis mojo is the lead global agency of Nescafe. Products are sold throughout India and also are exported to Russia, Hungary and several other countries. Visibility and availability of product had been supported by smaller stock keeping units. MARKETING MIX Product Nestea will be a high quality product offered as specially blended Black tea as well as Fruit and Herbs. Contents of the Nestea black are: 40 bags, 80 bags, 150 bags, 250 bags (Family pack) The amount of bag refers to different target groups. 40 bags for singles, 80 bags for couples, 150 bags and 250 bags are Family packs. Contents of Nestea fruit and Nestea herbal is 25 bags. Place Tea is imported from India because the company is able to get high quality for a reasonable price. The final product will be distributed to Retailers such as supermarkets and small shops so the end consumer has easy access to it. Place in supermarkets: The fruit and herbal tea boxes should be placed on the top of the shelves in the supermarkets. Beneath them on the middle and lower levels the black tea should be placed according to the content of tea bags. 40 bags should be placed higher than the ones containing more bags. Price Nestea price would be Content Price Nestea Black 40 bags Rs. 40.99 Nestea Black 80 bags Rs. 78.99 Nestea Black 150 bags Rs. 145.99 Nestea Black 250 bags Rs. 235.99 Peppermint 25 bags Rs. 49.99 Mango Peach 25 bags Rs. 39.99 Apple 25 bags Rs. 40.99 Vanilla 25 bags Rs. 41.99 Promotion The promotion is the most important point to launch our products because we want to be able to compete with our biggest competitor â€Å"Lipton Tea†. We are going to set up original events in order to attract new customers and consumers of the other tea brands. Promotion in supermarkets: We want to set up a stand in the supermarket in order to make tasting to the supermarkets clients. The stand should represent the brand with the colour of the company During the launch of our product, all the customers at the supermarket will receive a sample of â€Å"Nestea† for free at the cashers including a voucher which explains the game to win a trip to London. Promotional offers during the year: If a client buys a box of 150 bags, he will get a free cup or a spoon. If he buys a box of 250 bags, he will get a free box of vanilla tea. The only thing that the strategies used should be according to the plan. As according to the plan first preference should be the customers taste. The competitors are strong so in the starting we should be on our toes. Ultimately the goal s to make it big and really big. This Nestea will definitely make a change to NESCAFE. Osteomyelitis Etiology Pathogenesis Differential Diagnosis And Treatment Biology Essay

Osteomyelitis Etiology Pathogenesis Differential Diagnosis And Treatment Biology Essay Osteomyelitis presents as an infection of the bone that is caused by different forms of bacteria. The infection of the cortical and medullary bone can often lead to distinct forms of necrosis, formation of new bone, and obliteration of the bone in its entirety. (3) It is a disease that can cause morbidity. Cases are usually based on a causative agent, the infections duration, the anatomy of the infected bone, and the path the organisms follow in order to gain passage into the bone. (4)With the increasing cases of osteomyelitis being linked to diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, and the aging population, this disease is becoming more difficult to treat and cure. (1,2,3,4,5,6) Over the past few decades, osteomyelitis has changed its form. Evolving into a disease with many backgrounds, this disease takes heed amongst many polymicrobials. In the past, osteomyelitis cases involved a link to strains of Staphylococcus Aureus. Although Staphylococcus Aureus, also known as S. Aureus, a bacterium, is still the most common organism involved in this disease, a number of infections have been caused by gram negative organisms. These cases would find treatment in surgical debridement and therapy for 4 to 6 weeks of methicillin.(1) Some organisms include mycobacterium, Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, which is found in drug addicts, and organisms that are active in the Gastrointestinal Tract of the elderly. Coagulase-negative staphylococci are pathogens whom also play a distinct role in the presentation of osteomyelitis. (1,4) Pathogenesis   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Osteomyelitis is caused by microorganisms entering the bone by various mechanisms. These mechanisms include inoculation by distant substances, direct transmission from neighboring soft tissue infection, and hematogenous dissemination via bacteriemia. (3) Ischemia, trauma, and foreign substances can expose vulnerable sites to which bacteria penetrates defenses set by the host. Enzymes are released by a number of phagocytes that attempt to hold the infection. Bacteria can connect tightly to damaged bone. Through interaction with the damaged bone, bacteria withdraws from the host defenses and enters inside the osteoblasts. Furthermore, the infection can lead to sensitive neutrophils, congested blood vessels, and microorganisms which is the basis for acute osteomyelitis.(2) Acute osteomyelitis is an infection that may develop over a short span of time. In children, this osteomyelitis may present as fever, chills, and even pain. The feature that is known to disting uish chronic osteomyelitis is the depletion of living osteocytes also known as necrotic bone.(3) This can occur when osteomyelitis is not properly treated, thus the chronic type of infection may occur.(1) Moreover, two classification systems exist in the Waldvogel and Cierny-Mader Classification in regards to osteomyelitis.   Waldvogel classifies adult osteomyelitis by chronicity and its pathogenesis. These categories of osteomyelitis are labeled hematogenous osteomyelitis, osteomyelitis secondary to a contiguous focus of infection, and chronic osteomyelitis. Acute Hematogenous Osteomyelitis involves a single bone, usually the tibia or femur, and is where bacteria resides in the metaphysis of growing bones. Hematogenous infection in adults is uncommon for the long bones and thus involves the diaphysis. It accounts for 20% of cases of osteomyelitis and is the main cause for children.(3) The common site that affects the adults the most is the vertebrae where hematogenous ostemyeliti s thrives. Patients with this infection tend to have pain in the neck and back. Osteomyelitis secondary to a contiguous focus of infection occurs mostly in adults and accounts for about 80% of all cases.(3) This can occur through bites, wounds and open fractures. The main group of focus here are the individuals who have Peripheral Arterial Disease and Diabetes. This can result in numerous amputations for diabetics. The patient here does not have the proper knowledge to know that the infection is flourishing inside the bone. Trauma and sores can make the foot vulnerable to diabetic neuropathy. In regards to chronic osteomyelitis, about 5% of cases from acute hematogenous osteomyelitis leads to chronic osteomyelitis.(3) Chronic infection tends to have a more contiguous-focus origin than that of a hematogenous osteomyelitis due to the presence of foreign substances inhabiting the infection for a significant amount of time. Furthermore, Cierny- Mader classifies by condition of the patie nt by an anatomic stage and a physiological stage. (3,5) Differential Diagnosis   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Diagnosis of osteomyelitis may involve numerous procedures. These procedures should be a factor in patients with fever, inflammatory reactions, regional skeletal pain, and positive blood cultures. Blood tests are usually done in order to determine the amount of white blood cells present to battle with the infection. Blood is cultured to reveal the causative bacteria in the specimen. Moreover, an Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR), blood cell count, and C-reactive protein test can help to indicate osteomyelitis. (2,3)   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Scanning examinations such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging(MRI), x-rays, three phase bone scans , and other radionuclide studies, may help determine bone inflammation. Bone inflammation is witnessed through injection of radioactive elements into the blood stream. Biopsies can also be performed in order to determine various bacteria lurking in the area. (1,2)The differential diagnosis for osteomyelitis is neuroarthropathy of the foot. On radiographs, bone infections are equivalent to bone lesions. However, if there is no ulcer present, the diagnosis can be viewed as damage to the bone and thus, is a result of neuroarthropathy. (2,3) Treatment   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The two forms of treatment of osteomyelitis most commonly used are surgical therapy and antibiotic therapy. Surgical therapy is distinguished based on the infections extent. When dealing with acute osteomyelitis, the key component deals with debridement of the dead tissue. In regards to chronic osteomyelitis, there is a resection of foreign substances, and also debridement of soft tissue.(1,2,3,4) Skin and bone grafts may be used to potentiate the start of new bone growth by covering the wound. Furthermore, surgical approach may increase the chances for re-ulceration. This surgical approach is understood with help from biomechanics of foot function. (2)   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Antibiotic therapy is used to kill bacteria. There is oral and intravenous therapy used to target these causative organisms. Intravenous antimicrobial therapy is the treatment of choice for chronic osteomyelitis. In adults, four to six weeks of intravenous antibiotic treatment is needed along with sufficient bed rest. Usually, surgery may be needed to drain the pus accumulated and to clean the affected areas. (4)   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Alternative treatments also exist in attempts to treat osteomyelitis. Some have recommended that increasing the use of particular vitamin supplements, garlic extracts, herbal remedies such as Echinacea, golden seal, and even ginseng may help to relieve certain pains associated with infections. Homeopathic remedies may be useful in counter acting inflammation. (7) Antibiotic-impregnated acrylic beads have also been used for bone infection treatment. The beads should be used along with certain antibiotics. This requires adequate surgical placement in the area specified. Non-biodegradeable beads may be removed surgically after 2-4 weeks. While biodegradeable beads do not require surgical removal and may help for an extended period of time. (3,7) Conclusion   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Osteomyelitis requires excellent care of injuries and wounds. It may require surgical treatment and antibiotic therapy in order to reduce its effects. Osteomyelitis accounts for a great percentage of cases in adults. Typically, diagnosis of osteomyelitis presents with pain, fever, and other inflammatory signs due to bony infection. This disease has surfaced in Peripheral Arterial Disease and in the small bones of diabetics. Once a bone infection is confirmed by efficient procedures such as biopsy, treatment should follow accordingly. Following protocol consisting of debridement and appropriate IV antibiotics for 4 to 6 weeks helps in the general outreach of proper osteomyelitis management. (1,2,3,4,5,6)

The Impact of Music on the Mind, Body and Spirit Essay -- Exploratory

The Impact of Music on the Mind, Body and Spirit Music is fun. The very mention of the word seems to stir emotions that are exciting and interesting. The mind shifts to recall memories that have long passed, moments that could presently be experienced, or future events that will hold a place in one's heart and mind. In everything, there is sound. Where there is sound, there can be music. Where there is music, activities are taking place with implications affecting one's path in life. In an elementary schoolroom, kindergardeners are learning the ABC song to go home and sing to their parents. Later, these kids are learning to not step on their date's feet on a gym floor at their first school dance. Years later, a team is preparing with exhilarating sounds to clash with their rivals. As this class of students is graduating, they reminisce during their class song. These events will shape their lives with the things they have learned along the way. I am a music fan and a supporter of learning, and, with this project, I learned that both had a connection. As a report, this paper tells of the ways having music in one's life benefits mentally, physically, and emotionally. The power of music stimulates brain growth in the uterus and during the early years of childhood. Also, it positively affects emotional awareness and attitudes from before birth and onward. One can build a comprehension of the world by the provision of patterns given by music. The ability to crawl, walk, and run is developed with more ease. Additionally, the use of sound improves language arts, which vocabulary and expressiveness. House at Hidden Valley :: essays research papers

My Weekend Family Get-Away   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Throughout my childhood I liked to escape from everyday routine and be alone with my family or my closest friends. There was the trail in the woods by the old battlefield where I would take my dog for long walks and for a change of scenery. There was the pond where my friends and I would go and throw rocks to see who could get theirs to skip the farthest. These places are vivid in my memory because that’s where I would go to have fun, but the one place that sticks out in my memory the most, the place I know better than anyone, my weekend get-away, was my family’s house at Hidden Valley Ski Resort. While I was growing up I was blessed to have this house to go to on the weekends during the winter. Come Friday I would be so excited because I knew where I would be going, I loved it up there. The sights of the resort, the distinct smell of the house, and the anticipation of the drive up there all contribute to the most vivid and realistic memories I remem bered about this place   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The excitement that filled my mind was incomprehensible to any person who has never experienced this for them self. The trip up to the house was only an hour but it felt like three or four. Snow would fall on the windshield, then be wiped away by the windshield wipers as we were driving, and every five minutes my mother would scream, â€Å"Watch out, Jeff,† as she would grab the handle on the door. As we pass through the tollbooth at exit 9, my Dad threw the change in the container. From the ting, ting, ting, sound the change made, I knew that we were close. â€Å"Only twenty more minutes,† he would say, then right after my Mom would say, â€Å"Yeah, more like ten the way he’s driving.† Finally, we would make the right hand turn into the resort and drive up the hill. About half way I would get a feeling in my stomach not the feeling you get when your nervous, the one you get when your excited. With the first step out of the car onto the frozen ground the snow would crackle beneath my feet. Sometimes I would get a little in my shoe right between my sock and my pants.

Life of Pi Analysis

Summary Piscine Molitor Patel – Protagonist in the story, also the narrator – also known as Pi Ravi Patel – Pi’s older brother by three years Santosh Patel – Pi’s father, owns a zoo in Pondicherry, India Gita Patel – Pi’s Mother Satish Kumar – Pi’s biology teacher in Pondicherry Father Martin – A catholic priest that introduces Pi to the catholic faith Satish Kumar – A Muslim mystic that shares the same name with Pi’s biology teacher Hindu Pandit – A man whom is never named, he becomes very angry at Pi for practicing religions other than his own Pi Patel, a Hindu boy from Pondicherry, India, narrates this novel. The novel begins with Pi going into great depth about the life of a sloth, which reminds him of a god. Pi explains how he got his name – from a swimming pool. This leads into Pi’s life story, which begins with his fond memories of his father’s zoo in India. Fo llowing this is a memory of a trip he took with his family, where he meets a catholic priest who introduces him to Catholicism. Later on this trip, Pi meets a Muslim mystic who introduces Pi to the Muslim faith.Pi is deeply intrigued with other religions and their practices, but his curiosity crushed when a Hindu Pandit informs Pi’s parents that he is practicing other religions than his own. Significant Quotes â€Å"I know zoos are no longer in people’s good graces. Religion faces the same problem. Certain illusions about freedom plague them both. † Page 21 This quote shows how closely related Pi sees animals and religion.People misunderstand the life of animals in the wild; they do not understand that life in captivity at a zoo might very well be a better life for an animal – just as people misunderstand what it means for someone to be free of a religion. Religion can take away the harshness of reality, just as the walls of a zoo enclosure can show one r eality, but not the one beyond the walls. Pi is trying to show how religion can make a life simpler and more enjoyable. â€Å"I can well imagine an atheist’s last words: â€Å"White, white! L-L-Love! My God! †Ã¢â‚¬â€and the deathbed leap of faith.Whereas the agnostic, if he stays true to his reasonable self, if he stays beholden to dry, yeastless factuality, might try to explain the warm light bathing him by saying, â€Å"Possibly a f-f-failing oxygenation of the b-b-brain,† and, to the very end, lack imagination n and miss the better story. † Page 70 This quote illustrates how closely religion is linked to creativity and imagination. How an atheist believes in the nonexistence of god, still believes in something and has the capacity to change their beliefs, where as an agnostics are uncertain, with no beliefs and therefore lacking imagination to devise a guide for their life.Without stories of beliefs in our lives -like in an agnostics life – lif e is ‘dry ‘ and ‘yeastless’ or flat and dull. â€Å"I couldn’t get Him out of my head. Still can’t. I spent three solid days thinking about Him. The more He bothered me, the less I could forget Him. And the more I learned about Him, the less I wanted to leave Him. † Page 63 This quote shows the depth of Pi’s faith at such a young age. He seeks God not only through his own religion, but also in religions that he adopts throughout his journeys. Pi’s goal is to love God – innocent but extremely powerful.

Balance Scorecard method used in Cattaraugus Country ReHabilitation Center

Cattaraugus County ReHabilitation Center had done an effective job of implementing a balance scorecard approach in a fashion that reflects their organizational mission and vision MAIN BODY: Although the BSC method has been used in the for-profit organizations for many years I believe that ReHabilitation Center has made it work for their organization. There was a lot of push back from the people who work at the center when it was first introduced, they believed it was just another fly-by-night approach that would just fail but as the new Director of Strategic Management slow got the upper management to take a closer look and to start helping adapt the BSC method to their organization. Since the BSC wasn’t designed for the not-for-profit ReHabilitation Center had to do a bit of work to get everything working right and after a while they were able to get the BSC to work for their organization. There are four score card quadrants that ReHabilitation Center uses they are; Perspective , Strategy, Operations, Core Indicators/Measures. They then broke that down to five different parts of the organization under Perspective, there is; consumers, financial, operational, learning, and one that isn’t defined but seems to be consumer relations and customer service. ReHabilitation Center has seen great benefits from adapting the BSC to the center but the greatest benefit maybe that the personnel within the center has noticed how much more encompassing process that strategic planning is and not merely looking at a long-term plan. They now understand that is it necessary to align each are of the Center with the overall strategic objectives. Another benefit is that the Center has been able to develop metrics and link them to the strategic plan. The Center has begun to focus on the importance of interrelationships among the perspectives in the BSC and has enabled worker in the Center to see things they had not thought about in the past and relate them to the BSC.Every y ear they update the BSC they have set into place to and make sure they are still following along with it and making any necessary changes to either the scorecard or to the organization. With everyone being involved within the organization of the strategic planning they have the ability to make sure that the strategic plan is being followed or seeing what changes need to be made on a consistent bases.CONCLUSION:â€Å"The conceptual framework of the Balanced Scorecard has been implemented and utilized effectively for years in a large number of for-profit organizations. More recently, the model has been effectively utilized in not-for-profit organizations as well. In this paper the authors have described how the Balanced Scorecard approach has been implemented in a ReHabilitation Center. In implementing the Balanced Scorecard approach, the ReHabilitation Center has placed equal emphasis on the consumer perspective and the financial perspective. This equal focus is based upon the necess ity of the Center to carry out its primary mission for its consumers (individuals with developmental disabilities) as well as the necessity to maintain financial stability within the Center. The emphasis on both of these perspectives has become a necessity in order for the Center to efficiently and effectively serve its customers. While the use of the Balanced Scorecard in the long range planning process for the Center is relatively new, the process has been accepted by the management of the organization. The challenge ahead for the Center is to continue to develop outcome measures for the individual departments within the Center and tie these outcome measures to the strategic objectives of the Center. It is recognized this is an extremely difficult process as real outcomes are not easily measurable. The formulation of outcome measures is a continuous development process. It is felt this process will definitely enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the ReHabilitation Center in the long run (Martello, 2008). †
